The Indian society is undergoing a growing crisis related to a much debated issue 'Indianness'-a sentiment of being an Indian-socially, culturally and spiritually. This logocentric term 'Indianness' implies a monolithic characteristic of Indian people. Thought, action, behaviour, movement-all are under the lens of (in)visible eyes to shape all the Indians in a same mould. Democracy itself appears as a socio-political normativism as if it ought to be upheld by everyone. Plurality of reasons is being limited because of such normativity. At this time, message of Sri Ramakrishna, a well-known Bangalee legend, might be thought provoking while 'Indianness' lacks plurality of reasons. Once Sri Ramakrishna said 'jato mat tato path'. He taught mankind to believe in all-inclusiveness irrespective of people's social, cultural and spiritual identity. His thought supports plurality of reasons and subjective reality which are the need of the hour in present day Indian context. This paper, therefore, intends to highlight the relevance of the message of Sri Ramakrishna in present day India.

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA: HIS LIFE, LEGACY & LIBERATIVE ETHICS

This volume arises from deliberations at the first International Academic Conference in the United States to explore the life and legacy of the Hindu visionary, liberative theologian, and great modern exponent of Ādvaita Vedanta, Swami Vivekananda. The conference took place in Los Angeles on October 18th-19th, 2013, marking the 150 th centenary of the birth of Swami Vivekananda, an advocate of interreligious dialogue and foremost disciple of the modern era's most influential Hindu mystic, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. The conference was sponsored by the School of Religion of the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. Over 150 years since his birth and some 120 years after his momentous plenary address at the World Parliament of Religion in Chicago (1893), numerous aspects of Swami Vivekananda's life and work have begun to attract renewed attention. Vivekananda's philosophical, religious and social ideas, especially the manner in which they were extended, applied, or appropriated in recent times have been widely discussed, critiqued, and presented. His legacy, however, is being re-appraised within these pages in terms of its continuity as well as its discontinuity from tradition, and from postcolonial, feminist, hermeneutical, and ethical perspectives. This volume offers a multi-layered exploration of the contributions of Swami Vivekananda to a range of discursive and practical engagements that cut evenly across the Hindu traditions of philosophy, theology, ethics, and social justice. There are historical questions as well as exegetical or scholastic questions about the connection Swami Vivekananda claimed or is perceived to have had with the deeper recesses of

Adept in various Vedantic techniques and Tantric practices, he remained an innocent child of the Goddess throughout his life. He was an epitome of spiritual powers & a favourite of his disciples especially Narendranath (later, Swami Vivekananda). He supported the Vedantic ideal of seeing God in men, right through his life. This paper traces the life of this saintly icon who was a true example of living for the service of mankind. Keywords: Divine, Saints, Seers, Goddess, Vedanta,

The theme selected for the article is a specific issue regarding a perceived contradiction in Swami Vivekananda's approach towards Shankaracharya. Article explains it by projecting two images of Shankaracharya available from the tradition itself, for properly positioning the opposing viewpoints of Swamiji Maharaj. A group of modern academicians have criticised, often sarcastically, the Vedantic approach of the Ramakrishna Movement. They condemn Swamiji's teaching of Vedanta as a deviation from the 'tradition' as they understand the term. Through this article their concept of the tradition and the true Sampradaya are differentiated. Therefore the terms 'tradition' and 'Sampradaya' are used here in different senses; they are not interchangeable.
